A jumbo or oversized wall plate is designed for the same standard electrical devices as a regular-size wall plate

When shopping for wall plates, terms like jumbo, oversized, and extra-large can sometimes cause confusion. Does an oversized wall plate require a larger switch or outlet? Are the openings bigger? Are the mounting screw holes spaced differently?

The answer is no.

A jumbo or oversized wall plate is designed for the same standard electrical devices as a regular-size wall plate. The difference is the overall outside dimensions of the plate.

Bigger Wall Plate — Same Device Openings

The purpose of an oversized wall plate is simple: more wall coverage.

Jumbo and oversized wall plates are especially useful when the drywall, plaster, paint, tile, or other wall surface around an electrical box is imperfect. A larger plate extends farther beyond the electrical box and helps cover gaps, chips, rough cuts, old paint lines, or other imperfections that a standard-size wall plate may leave exposed.

But the switch, outlet, GFCI, or other wiring device underneath does not change.

That means the device openings and mounting screw spacing remain in their normal positions.

A Rocker / *Decora® / GFCI Opening Is Still the Same Opening

This is particularly noticeable with rocker, Decora-style, and GFCI wall plates.

On a standard-size wall plate, the mounting screws may appear quite close to the top and bottom beveled edges of the plate. There is a reason for that: the screws must line up with the mounting points on the electrical device.

When you move to a jumbo or oversized wall plate, those mounting points cannot simply be moved farther apart. The plate still needs to fit the same standard wiring device.

Instead, the plate becomes larger around the opening and mounting area.

As a result, the screws on an oversized plate appear farther inward from the outside edges. The screw spacing itself has not changed—the outside edges of the wall plate have moved farther away.

Example: Oversized Combination Wall Plate Item # 86865

A good example is our 86865 combination wall plate, which combines one toggle opening with one rocker/Decora-style opening.

The oversized plate measures:

5.5 inches high × 5.5 inches wide

The toggle position uses standard device mounting with 2.375 inches between mounting holes.

The rocker/Decora/GFCI position likewise maintains the mounting dimensions required for a standard Decora-style or GFCI device, 3.812 in. between mounting holes.

In other words, although the wall plate itself is larger, it is still designed around standard-size electrical devices.

Jumbo & Oversized Wall Plates: What Size Really Means

The Same Principle Applies to Other Wall Plate Configurations

This isn't unique to combination plates. The same basic principle applies across jumbo and oversized wall plates.

A jumbo toggle wall plate still fits a standard toggle switch. An oversized duplex receptacle plate still fits a standard duplex receptacle. A jumbo rocker wall plate still fits a standard rocker, Decora-style switch, or compatible GFCI device.

The additional size is there primarily to provide additional coverage around the electrical device, not to change the device itself.

This is also why an oversized wall plate can often solve a problem without requiring any electrical work. If a standard plate doesn't quite cover an oversized drywall opening, chipped plaster, an imperfect tile cut, or marks left by an older wall plate, replacing it with a larger plate may provide the extra coverage needed.

Standard, Jumbo and Oversized: Think Outside Dimensions

An easy way to remember it is:

Standard, jumbo, and oversized refer primarily to the outside dimensions of the wall plate.

The electrical device underneath remains standard, so the openings and mounting locations must remain compatible with that device.

This also explains the visual difference between the two sizes. On a standard plate, mounting screws can look relatively close to the outside edge. On a jumbo or oversized plate, the same screws may look noticeably farther away from the edge because there is simply more wall plate surrounding them.
