If you have a long, narrow outlet cover that nothing at the hardware store seems to fit, you're in the right place. Tandem plates are the same width as a standard size wall plate but extended vertically to cover both boxes under one slim plate, and they are nearly impossible to find at big-box stores.
What Is a Tandem Wall Plate?
A standard 2-gang wall plate covers two boxes side by side. A tandem plate covers two boxes stacked vertically. You'll often see them in older apartment buildings, co-ops, and historic homes, typically combining an outlet with a phone jack, or an outlet with a blank cover over a second box below it.

How to Find the Right Tandem Plate
Before ordering, take the old plate off and check three things:
- Overall size: tandem plates are approximately 8-1/4" x 2-3/4". If yours is larger or smaller, it may be a different specialty size such as Princess, Midi, or Jumbo/Oversize. Our Wall Plate Sizes Guide can help.

Can I use a regular 2-gang plate instead?
No. Standard 2-gang plates are made for side-by-side boxes. Tandem plates are designed specifically for boxes stacked vertically.
